A fresh start for Spring

jessthompson088

I have really missed the energising company of young artists and its wonderful to be back this spring with a new cohort. This week we were experimenting with quick drawing techniques, using different media to do super fast sketches of shells. The children loved the deep blacks of the charcoal and the different textures they could make with graphite and soft pencils.

Once we were loosened up we made the first stage of our abstract paintings. The children chose whether they would begin by focusing on warm or cool colours before working loosely, scraping the colours with old credit cards to make overlaying layers of colour which blend and compliment each other. The kids loved building up the loose layers, this was a very physical session, almost like dancing and the results are great. Next week we will use the textures we created with charcoal and pencil to add in some intricate details... I cant wait to see the results!
