Having focused on cool tones for our winter self portraits a couple of weeks ago I thought it would be nice to warm things up for my year 1 and 2 art club this week. We read the story 'there's a lion in my cornflakes' and then painted these awesome lion faces using all the warm tones we could get our hands on.
I taped the edges of the paper first, it's a small detail that really makes the images sing when the paint is dry and the clean border is revealed. We made the lion faces from shapes built up to form the whole; a rectangle first, then circles for ears, a semi circle for the chin and so on. The vibrancy of the colours was echoed by the way the children worked giving these paintings real energy.
